If you’re a parent, you know how quickly school stress can affect the whole household. Homework battles, meltdowns after school, or feedback from teachers about concentration can leave you feeling worried and unsure where to start.
This month, we’re focusing on kids, teens and learning at Brain Harmonics Durban. Often, challenging behaviour or school struggles are signs that a child’s brain is overwhelmed, not that they are lazy or naughty. Some common signs include:
Zoning out or daydreaming in class
Getting “stuck” on tasks or needing constant reminders
Meltdowns or shutdowns after school
Anxiety around tests, social situations, or separation
Difficulty falling or staying asleep
A brain‑map (qEEG) allows us to see how a child’s brain is functioning – which areas are overactive, underactive or struggling to communicate efficiently. Neurofeedback then gently trains the brain toward more balanced patterns. Many parents report improvements in focus, emotional regulation, confidence, and sleep.
Some questions I’m often asked:
“At what age can my child start?”Children can begin from a young age, depending on their ability to sit with support for short periods. We tailor the approach to each child.
“Will it hurt or scare them?”No. Sensors simply read brain activity; nothing is put into the brain. Sessions are designed to be child‑friendly, using games or videos.
“How long until we see shifts?”Every child is different, but some families notice early changes in sleep or regulation within a few weeks. Deeper, lasting changes typically require a series of sessions.
Here are 3 after‑school brain‑calming ideas you can try:
Snack + water before any homework (stabilising blood sugar and hydration).
10–15 minutes of movement (park time, trampoline, stretching) to discharge school stress.
A short, predictable routine for homework in the same spot each day.
If you’re concerned about your child’s focus, mood or school performance, you can book a Brighter Minds Assessment, which includes a detailed consultation and a look at what support might be most helpful.
