All About Neurofeedback

Sebern Fisher, a prominent neurofeedback expert and author of Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain, offers this insight: “A different person arises out of a regulated brain.”

Information

What is Neurofeedback Therapy?

Neurofeedback is the science of changing brain waves by giving your brain real time information about where it is at.

The brain produces waves of different frequencies according to its current activity. For example, during deep sleep your brain produces mainly delta and theta waves, which are slow waves. On the opposite end of the scale, while doing a difficult maths problem, the brain should produce mainly beta waves, which are fast and enable us to complete this kind of task.

What causes imbalance in the brain?

The modern brain processes vastly more information than in the past, overwhelming its capacity to cope. While mild stress enhances focus, excessive stress leads to depression, disorganization, and impaired concentration, even damaging brain structure. Prolonged high stress can oversensitize the amygdala, causing unnecessary "fight or flight" responses that drain energy and shift brain resources. Chronic stress also leads to anxiety, fatigue, and depression. The brain develops coping mechanisms for constant stress, which can become ingrained and persist even after the stressor is gone, ironically maintaining the negative state.
